Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month

Image by Westend61 GmbH | Available on pocstock

Despite making up nearly 19% of the U.S. population, Latine individuals face notable gaps in representation; they appear in only 3.3% of stock photos, 5% of ads, and hold just 4.4% of C-suite roles. This edition highlights these disparities and emphasizes the urgent need for more accurate representation, all while celebrating the numerous contributions of the Latine community.

This Hispanic Heritage Month, let’s highlight the significant impact of the Hispanic community in the U.S. Not only do they contribute over $3.6 trillion to the economy, but their influence is expanding rapidly—projected to reach 25% of the population by 2050. This growth positions it as the fifth-largest economy globally, surpassing the annual outputs of India, the United Kingdom, France, and Canada.Their impact goes far beyond these figures, reflected in the music, work ethic, and creativity they bring to the US.

Positive Contributions by the Hispanic Community:

  • Economic Growth: The number of Hispanic-owned businesses surged by 34% from 2007 to 2019, significantly outpacing the 17% growth for all U.S. businesses during the same period.
  • Education: The high school graduation rate for Hispanic students climbed to approximately 85%, a significant increase from around 60% two decades ago.
  • Political Representation: The number of Hispanic members in Congress has grown to 61, a notable rise from 21 a decade ago.

Cultural Impact:

  • Music: Latin music revenue in the U.S. hit a record $1.4 billion in 2023, up 16% from 2022, now representing 7.9% of the total music market, according to the RIAA.
  • Movies: Latinos, who make up 19% of the U.S. population, account for 24% of box office sales and streaming subscriptions, and watch films an average of 3.3 times per year, more than Asian-Americans (2.9 times) and White Americans (2.3 times).
  • Cultural Influence: A 2024 Pew Research Center report reveals that 10% of U.S. restaurants serve Mexican food, highlighting the growing popularity of Latin cuisine.

Let’s celebrate these achievements and continue working towards greater representation and recognition of the Latine community.

“When Latino kids don’t see themselves represented on stage or film or television or newspapers or history textbooks, what they’re told is, ‘You don’t matter. But when they see themselves represented, then they are told … ‘You are important. You are authors. You are scientists. You are explorers. You are special. You are leaders. You are respected. You are the reason we are here.’” — John Leguizamo

What’s the difference between Hispanic, Latino, Latinx, and Latine?

When talking about people from Latin America or those with Latin American heritage in the U.S., different terms have been used, each with its own nuances. The terms “Hispanic,” “Latino,” “Latinx,” and “Latine” all try to capture this diverse group of people, but they do so in different ways, reflecting various cultural and linguistic considerations.

Hispanic is one of the older terms, and it’s used to describe people from Spanish-speaking countries, including Spain and many Latin American countries. The term was created mainly for government forms and data collection. However, it has some limitations. For instance, it doesn’t include Portuguese-speaking Brazilians and can overlook the rich mix of cultures, including indigenous and Afro-descendant communities, within Latin America.

Latino (for men) and Latina (for women) came into use as alternatives to “Hispanic” because they are more inclusive of the diverse countries in Latin America. Unlike “Hispanic,” “Latino” also includes Brazilians, who speak Portuguese. But these terms still have a limitation: they’re gendered, meaning they specify male or female identities, which doesn’t work for everyone, especially for people who identify as non-binary or gender non-conforming.

To address this, Latinx was introduced as a gender-neutral option. The idea was to create a term that doesn’t focus on gender, making it more inclusive for everyone, regardless of gender identity. However, some people find “Latinx” awkward to pronounce and not very familiar in everyday Spanish conversation, which has led to some discomfort with its use.

Enter Latine. This term is a recent development that aims to address the issues with “Latinx.” “Latine” is gender-neutral but fits better with Spanish pronunciation and grammar. It’s easier for Spanish speakers to use and sounds more natural. By using “Latine,” people can be inclusive of non-binary individuals while still respecting the flow of the Spanish language.

So why might “Latine” be preferred over “Latinx”? Simply put, “Latine” strikes a better balance. It’s inclusive and acknowledges non-binary identities while also fitting in with the way Spanish is spoken. For many, it’s a term that feels both modern and respectful, making it a more comfortable choice for everyday use.

In short, while each term has its place, “Latine” seems to offer a more practical and culturally sensitive solution to the need for inclusivity. It respects the linguistic norms of Spanish and addresses the diverse identities within the Latin American community in a way that feels more natural and accessible.

From inception, our goal for pocstock.comwas to increase representation of all people of color, including arming everyone with the authentic and inclusive content needed to communicate with Latine and Hispanic people year-round, not just on Cinco de Mayo.

We still have a whole lot of work to do to increase representation of one of the fastest growing demographics in the USA, and we welcome you to join us – todo por la cultura!

Let’s continue to empower Latine entrepreneurs

As a certified entrepreneurship trainer and a bilingual speaker, I am passionate about empowering Latine entrepreneurs and connecting them with networks, markets, and resources. I am an active member and leader of several organizations that promote the economic development and cultural diversity of the Latine community, such as the Statewide Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of NJ, the State Theatre New Jersey, the Hispanic Chamber of E-Commerce, and the Middlesex County Office of Workforce Development.

I also share my insights and expertise as a speaker and panelist at various events and publications. My mission is to provide a wide array of financial solutions to help Latine businesses succeed and thrive.

Luis O. De La Hoz

“By maintaining a consistent presence and engagement, the chamber ensures its long-term sustainability and relevance. A chamber that actively connects with its members and the community is more likely to achieve its goals and drive positive impact. In essence, constant outreach activities form the backbone of a thriving minority chamber of commerce. They build a sense of community, facilitate collaboration, and amplify the chamber’s ability to advocate for and support the needs of Hispanic business owners. Through these efforts, the chamber becomes a central hub for networking, empowerment, and growth within the business ecosystem.”

instock: Mind the gap collection focused on gender pay equality

International Equal Pay Day on September 18th highlights the ongoing wage gap, revealing that women in the U.S. earn approximately 84 cents for every dollar earned by men. This disparity is even more pronounced for women of color, as demonstrated by the following statistics, which emphasize the combined impact of racial and gender inequalities:

  • Black Women: Earn about 63 cents for every dollar earned by a white man
  • Latina Women: Earn only 56 cents for every dollar earned by a white man.
  • Asian Women: Earn approximately 90 cents for every dollar earned by a white man, though this figure masks disparities among different Asian subgroups.
  • Native American Women: Earn around 60 cents for every dollar earned by a white man.

It’s time to close the significant gap in pay, recognition, and opportunity faced by women of color in the United States. Achieving this requires more than just support for DEI; it demands that everyone—business owners, employers, and individuals alike—demonstrate their commitment through financial action. As Founder of The Great Exhale, Lisa Hurley says, if you truly support us, you need to “Say it with your checks!”

Speak out about these disparities, advocate for salary transparency, and don’t shy away from negotiation. As the Co-Founder of EqualSpace Sharespace & Incubator, Citi Medina, recently advised, “Ask for double what you think you’re worth, because you’re worth more.”
